Ravichandran Ashwin Critiques Chennai Super Kings' IPL 2026 Performance
Chennai Super Kings' Disappointing IPL 2026 Campaign
Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian off-spinner and current commentator, delivered a harsh critique of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) under Ruturaj Gaikwad's leadership in the IPL 2026. The team's aspirations for playoff qualification were dashed following an 89-run defeat to the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 21.
CSK was already teetering on the edge of elimination after losing to the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk. The subsequent loss to the Titans confirmed their exit from the tournament. Despite a late-season surge where they won six out of eight matches, three consecutive losses in the final games ultimately ended their playoff dreams.
The Chennai Super Kings concluded their season with 12 points, having secured six victories in 14 matches, and recorded a net run rate (NRR) of -0.345. This marked their third consecutive season without a playoff appearance.
A Shift from MS Dhoni's Legacy
In light of CSK's defeat to the Gujarat Titans, Ashwin provided a sobering assessment of the franchise's current state. On his YouTube channel, 'Ash Ki Baat', he emphasized the need for the Chennai-based team to invest in seasoned, high-quality players rather than relying solely on potential.
He remarked, "CSK must focus on building a quality team with experienced players. They need variety in their bowling attack, both in pace and spin. A well-structured team is essential."
Ashwin further noted, "While youthful talent brings excitement, combining it with experience creates a powerful team. This is not the CSK that Dhoni led; times have changed, and success will take time to achieve."
Critique of Home-Ground Strategy
Having played for CSK for nine seasons, Ashwin also shared his thoughts on the team's strategy at their home ground. He praised Shivam Dube's positive batting but questioned the suitability of the current squad for Chepauk's conditions.
"Historically, players like Badrinath, Suresh Raina, and Shane Watson thrived in Chepauk's environment, which requires a more attritional batting approach. The current squad seems ill-suited for these conditions," he stated.
Since 2024, CSK has played 18 matches at Chepauk Stadium, winning only 8, indicating a decline in their once-dominant home performance. From 2008 to 2023, they had a remarkable record of 45 wins in 67 matches, but that stronghold has weakened in recent years.
