Ravi Shastri Advocates for Youth Leadership in Indian Test Cricket
Shastri's Perspective on Future Test Captaincy
Former head coach of Team India, Ravi Shastri, believes that after Rohit Sharma, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should focus on younger players for the Test captaincy. The sudden retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket have posed a significant challenge for the BCCI, which now needs to appoint a new captain ahead of the five-match Test series against England starting in June.
Shastri has expressed his disapproval of Jasprit Bumrah taking on the role of Test captain. He argues that Bumrah, who has recently returned from a serious back injury, may struggle under the pressure of captaincy, which could negatively impact his performance.
Concerns Over Bumrah's Captaincy
Shastri stated, 'For me, Bumrah could have been a good option after the Australia tour. However, I don't want him to be made captain and then lose him as a bowler.' He emphasized that Bumrah has just come back from a significant injury and has only played in the IPL, where he bowls four overs. The real test will come when he has to bowl 10-15 overs, and the added pressure of captaincy could affect his fitness.
It is noteworthy that Bumrah served as vice-captain alongside Rohit Sharma last year and has captained India in two Tests during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. Unfortunately, he had to leave one match due to a back strain, which resulted in a loss for India.
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as Future Captains
Shastri further suggested that India should consider appointing a young player for a long-term captaincy role. He identified Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as the most suitable candidates for this position.
He remarked, 'You need to prepare someone. Shubman has made a significant impression. At 25-26 years old, he deserves a chance and time. Rishabh is also a good option. Both are young and have the next ten years ahead of them.'
Shastri also noted that both players are gaining valuable leadership experience in the IPL, which will strengthen their skills. Shubman Gill is currently leading the Gujarat Titans, while Pant is the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants.
