Unusual Pregnancy Case in Portugal


In a remarkable incident from the city of Mineiros in Goiás, Portugal, a 19-year-old woman gave birth to twins, each having different fathers. This unusual situation arose after she engaged in relations with two men on the same day, leading to her becoming pregnant with both men's children.

After the twins turned eight months old, a DNA test was conducted. Surprisingly, the test confirmed that one child's DNA matched with one father, while the other child's results were negative. The woman then recalled her encounter with the second man on the same day, and upon testing, the DNA matched, confirming that she had given birth to twins from two different fathers.


Despite the twins having different biological fathers, their birth certificates can list the same individual, as the woman’s partner is currently caring for both children. The doctor overseeing the case expressed astonishment at the rarity of such occurrences.

Dr. Tulio Jorge Franco, who specializes in unusual pregnancies, noted that globally, only about 20 cases of twins with different fathers have been documented, a phenomenon known scientifically as heteroparental superfecundation.


The doctor explained that this occurs when two eggs from the same mother are fertilized by different men. He confirmed that the woman's pregnancy was normal and both children were born healthy without any complications. Currently, the twins are 1 year and 4 months old, and the case came to light when the woman permitted the doctor to disclose this information under anonymity.
