Brush Fire Breaks Out Near Freeway

A rapidly spreading brush fire ignited today close to the 14 Freeway and Pearblossom Highway in Palmdale, leading to a significant emergency response from the Los Angeles County Fire Department as the flames escalated swiftly due to windy conditions.

Fire Expands from 20 to 60 Acres

The incident, now referred to as the Lemon Fire, began at around 20 acres but quickly expanded. According to Incident Command, winds in the vicinity were recorded at 10 to 15 miles per hour, which propelled the flames and raised alarms about the fire's rapid growth. In a short time, the fire surged to 50 acres, advancing eastward, with officials warning it could reach 200 acres in just half an hour. The latest reports indicate the fire has grown to approximately 60 acres, threatening 3 to 4 structures directly.

Emergency Measures and Road Closures

As the fire continued to spread and conditions deteriorated, fire officials requested the closure of Angeles Forest Highway at Carson Mesa Road. Drivers in the vicinity are advised to avoid the area entirely and expect heavy emergency traffic if they must travel nearby. Numerous ground crews and aerial resources have been deployed to combat the fire, and they remain actively engaged in firefighting efforts. Deputies are already on-site and have called for additional units to assist in managing the situation.

Drones Complicate Firefighting Efforts

In addition to the fire itself, officials are facing another challenge: unauthorized drones flying over the active fire zone. These drones can hinder aerial firefighting operations, which are essential for controlling a rapidly spreading fire. Fire officials have raised concerns about this issue, prompting both Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol to intervene and locate the drone operators. Residents and visitors in the Palmdale area are urged to stay updated through local authorities and to avoid the vicinity of the 14 Freeway and Pearblossom Highway until further notice.
