Ram Mandir Management System Under Review Amid Donation Controversy
Changes Proposed in Ram Mandir Management
In light of the ongoing controversy regarding the alleged misuse of donations for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Nrupendra Mishra, the chairman of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Construction Committee, has suggested a complete overhaul of the temple's management system. He pointed out that this incident has revealed significant deficiencies in oversight, accountability, and adherence to established protocols.
Mishra emphasized that the alleged irregularities not only pose a challenge to the faith of devotees but also serve as a serious warning regarding the shortcomings within the temple's administrative framework. While he has not formally submitted a proposal, he has publicly expressed his belief that the entire management structure needs to be restructured and entrusted to experienced professionals. The controversy arose following accusations of financial discrepancies involving donations, with claims of amounts exceeding ₹7 crores that remain unverified.
Political Fallout and Investigation
The allegations have sparked significant political uproar, especially after cash was seized from the residence of a temple employee. In response, the Uttar Pradesh government established a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the donation registers, vault records, and CCTV footage. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that their accounts undergo regular audits and no irregularities have been found.
Describing the current administrative setup, Mishra noted that much of the temple's operations are managed informally by volunteers rather than through a clear institutional framework. He stated that the management practices differ significantly, with most individuals working as volunteers who receive informal instructions on their duties, lacking written orders, defined responsibilities, or proper task distribution.
Need for Formal Management Structure
According to Mishra, approximately 1,500 individuals are engaged in various tasks within the temple complex, highlighting the necessity for a formal and accountable management structure. He argued that for such a large institution, which attracts numerous devotees and donations from across the country and abroad, clearly defined administrative rules and accountability measures are essential. Referring to the donation theft controversy, the retired IAS officer and former principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that this incident has raised serious questions about the systems established to safeguard the offerings made by devotees.
