Rajnath Singh's Upcoming Visit to Germany to Enhance Defense Cooperation

This visit will include discussions with German officials and may lead to significant agreements, including a deal for six advanced submarines under Project 75I. The focus will also be on enhancing collaboration in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. This marks a notable moment as it is the first visit by an Indian defense minister to Germany in seven years, highlighting the importance of strengthening military relations.

Rajnath Singh's Three-Day Germany Visit

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is set to embark on a three-day trip to Germany starting April 21, aimed at strengthening defense collaboration between New Delhi and Berlin. During his visit, Singh will engage in discussions with his German counterpart Boris Pistorius and other senior officials. This marks the first visit by an Indian defense minister to Germany in seven years, with the last being Nirmala Sitharaman's trip in February 2019.

Focus on Defense Industrial Cooperation

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense, this visit will provide an opportunity to review ongoing defense cooperation between the two nations and explore new avenues for collaboration. The discussions will center on enhancing defense industrial cooperation, strengthening military-to-military relations, and identifying opportunities in emerging fields such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and drones.

Potential Agreements and Submarine Deal

The statement further indicated that a defense industrial cooperation roadmap and implementation arrangement may be signed in the presence of both defense ministers, focusing on training for United Nations peacekeeping missions. During Singh's visit, there is also a possibility of signing a deal for six advanced conventional submarines (Project 75I) for the Indian Navy. This deal is expected to range between ₹70,000 crore and ₹99,000 crore, with the submarines being constructed in India at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in collaboration with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.

Strengthening Underwater Capabilities

The submarines under Project 75I will significantly enhance the Indian Navy's underwater capabilities. In addition to the submarine deal, the focus will also be on increasing collaboration in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and drone technology. Both countries may sign a roadmap for defense industrial cooperation as well.
