On April 17, India confirmed that it received an invitation to participate in a maritime initiative led by the UK and France aimed at ensuring safe passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, confirmed the invitation, stating that details regarding India's role and discussions from the meeting would be shared soon.
International Efforts for Maritime Security
This invitation comes amid ongoing international efforts to secure one of the world's most crucial energy corridors, responsible for nearly 20 percent of global oil trade. The Ministry of External Affairs indicated that India has been requested to contribute to a collaborative plan aimed at maintaining uninterrupted navigation through this vital route. In Lebanon, a 10-day ceasefire has allowed displaced families to return home, with reports indicating that roads are congested as residents head back to war-torn southern regions and bomb-damaged areas of southern Beirut.
Ceasefire Developments in Lebanon
Following the ceasefire in Lebanon, where Israel is engaged in conflict with Tehran-backed Hezbollah, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran would lift restrictions on vessels passing through the critical Gulf energy corridor. The conflict, which lasted for 40 days, concluded with a ceasefire on April 8, following coordinated retaliatory strikes by the Iranian military and IRGC against coalition positions, targeting Iranian leadership and infrastructure.
