Rajnath Singh Commends Silver Medal Winners
On Tuesday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to Indian athletes Valluri Ajaya Babu and Sarvesh Kushare for their remarkable achievements at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where they secured silver medals in weightlifting and high jump, respectively. Singh took to X to commend Valluri Ajaya Babu for his impressive performance in the men's 79kg weightlifting category, highlighting his determination, composure, and competitive spirit.
"Congratulations to Valluri Ajaya Babu for clinching the Silver Medal in the Men's 79kg Weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. His exceptional grit and competitive spirit reflect India's growing prowess in weightlifting, showcasing the rewards of relentless dedication to excellence. I wish him continued success and many more achievements in the future," Rajnath Singh stated.
The Defence Minister also recognized Sarvesh Kushare for his silver medal in high jump, praising his technique and composure on the international stage. "Congratulations to Sarvesh Kushare for winning the Silver Medal in the High Jump at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. His performance is a testament to the rising strength of Indian athletics. I wish him ongoing success and many more accolades for our country in the future," Rajnath added on X.
India's Impressive Performance on Day 5
India showcased a strong performance on Day 5 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing four medals and raising its total medal count to 10. A standout moment was Sharmila Dhankar's gold medal in the women's shot put F57, marking her as India's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medallist in para athletics. Additionally, Shilpa K. Shyla benefited from a Nigerian athlete's disqualification, resulting in an upgrade to bronze and a double podium finish for India.
In athletics, Sarvesh Kushare earned silver in the men's high jump, while Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Satyanathan advanced to the long jump finals. The weightlifting category contributed three more medals, with Gyaneshwari Yadav winning silver, Bindyarani Devi taking bronze, and Valluri Ajaya Babu also securing silver. Progress was also noted in boxing and swimming, with several athletes moving forward in their events, including Sajan Prakash and Swatik Patil reaching the swimming finals. However, competitors like Tejas Shirse and Sumit Kundu were eliminated from their events.
Current Medal Tally for India
As of now, India's medal tally includes gold medals from Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila Dhankar, alongside five silver and three bronze medals across weightlifting, athletics, and para powerlifting.
