Ruckus in Lok Sabha Over Rahul Gandhi's Comments
On Friday, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, stirred controversy by labeling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a magician, leading to a strong backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While addressing the discussion on the Women's Reservation Bill, Gandhi accused the BJP of attempting to alter the electoral landscape of the country. He stated, 'You (BJP) are fearful of the current political climate and the diminishing of your power, which is why you are trying to change the political map of India. You've done this in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir, and now you think you can do it across the entire nation. For this, you will need to amend the Constitution.'
Gandhi asserted that the BJP was aware that the bill would not pass in the house, which is why they were panicking. He further remarked, 'The truth is that the magician has been caught. The magician of Balakot, the magician of demonetization, the magician of sindoor has suddenly been exposed.' He added that it is well-known that there is a partnership between our friends, the magician, and the businessman. BJP members reacted sharply to Gandhi's comments. Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, criticized Gandhi for using inappropriate language towards the Prime Minister and for tarnishing the reputation of the nation and the armed forces by referencing the Balakot strikes and Operation Sindoor.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to remove Gandhi's remarks from the record, stating that the words used by the opposition leader regarding the Prime Minister were extremely unfortunate. He expressed that mere condemnation was insufficient, emphasizing that repeatedly calling someone a 'magician' is indeed an insult to the people of the country. Singh urged that Gandhi should apologize.
Speaker Birla also mentioned that such language would not be tolerated in Parliament and reprimanded Gandhi, directing him to focus on the current issue. In response, Gandhi remarked that there was confusion among BJP leaders, but later agreed to refrain from using the term 'magician.' He clarified, 'You (BJP) are not the people of India, you are not the armed forces; you are a political organization. We are not attacking the people of India, nor the armed forces; we are targeting you. You are hiding behind the armed forces.'
