New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has made a bold assertion, claiming that the central government has been advising foreign delegations to avoid engaging with the Leader of the Opposition (LoP). He stated that this practice has been consistent during both UPA and NDA administrations. However, leaders from the ruling party have dismissed these allegations, insisting that the government adheres to established protocols in all interactions.

Gandhi's comments, made to reporters outside Parliament, come just before Russian President Vladimir Putin's scheduled two-day visit to India. His statements are likely to stir political debates and intensify the ongoing rivalry between the BJP and Congress.

He remarked, "Traditionally, meetings with the LoP have occurred with incoming delegations. This has always been the norm," referencing practices during the tenures of former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In response, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut stated, "Such decisions are made by the government. Atal ji was a national treasure, and the nation held him in high regard. I question why Rahul Gandhi is facing restrictions, as his dedication to the country seems dubious. His actions appear to incite division, raising concerns about his motives. If he wishes to compare himself to Atal ji, I recommend he join the BJP to emulate him."

BJP MP Bhim Singh questioned, "Why would the government prevent him? He only stirs chaos and fails to speak when necessary."

Brij Lal, another BJP MP, echoed this sentiment, asserting, "The government adheres to protocol, and operations will proceed as planned. Rahul Gandhi is merely politicizing the issue."

K. C. Tyagi from JD(U) clarified, "The government does not dictate such protocols. It is up to visiting heads of state to decide whom they wish to meet."

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale added, "Foreign dignitaries come at the invitation of the ruling party or government. If President Putin desires, Rahul Gandhi, as LoP, can meet him. The government plays no part in that."
