Constitution Under Threat, Says Rahul Gandhi
On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, expressed concerns about ongoing attacks on the Constitution, emphasizing its significance as a document representing the voices of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi, which must be safeguarded. Speaking at the 'Bahujan Swabhimaan Sabha' held in memory of revolutionary Veer Pasi in his constituency of Raebareli, Gandhi remarked that while we remember figures like Veer Pasi and Dr. Ambedkar, the ideology they stood for is not being adequately defended, as we witness assaults on the Constitution right before our eyes. He highlighted that the Constitution is not merely a document; it embodies the philosophies of Ambedkar, Veer Pasi, Mahatma Gandhi, and numerous social reformers like Narayan Guru from Kerala and Basavanna from Karnataka.
Gandhi also directed his criticism towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, predicting that Modi would soon appear on television with folded hands within a month.
Voices of Great Reformers Reflected in the Constitution
In his address, Gandhi referenced the teachings of Buddha, Guru Nanak, and Kabir, asserting that their voices resonate within the Constitution. He accused individuals of bowing before statues and organizing grand events, yet remaining silent when the Constitution and its underlying principles are under attack. He pointed out that those who bow before Ambedkar's statue often forget to uphold his ideology, stressing the importance of defending it when it is threatened. As some audience members applauded, Gandhi remarked that while they were clapping now, they remained silent when the Constitution was being undermined.
India Belongs to Everyone, Not Just a Few
Gandhi reiterated that the Constitution states India belongs to all, not to any caste, individual, billionaire, or organization. He referenced Modi's recent appeal urging citizens to reduce fuel consumption, gold purchases, and foreign travel to mitigate rising prices. Gandhi warned that inflation would escalate in the coming months, affecting the prices of petrol, diesel, gas, and food items. He criticized Modi for embarking on a tour of five countries immediately after urging people to refrain from traveling abroad. Furthermore, he accused the Prime Minister of undermining the MNREGA scheme, neglecting caste census, and favoring select industrialists, thereby launching a "day and night assault on the Constitution."
