Key Discussions on Kerala's Next Chief Minister

On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, held a meeting with party president Mallikarjun Kharge to finalize discussions regarding the selection of the next Chief Minister of Kerala. Despite the party's significant victory in the recent assembly elections, there has been ongoing uncertainty and protests concerning the delay in appointing the Chief Minister. The meeting took place at Kharge's residence and lasted approximately 40 minutes. No official statement was released immediately following the meeting.

Internal Party Dynamics and Candidate Selection

In an effort to assess the ground situation, the former Congress president met with several Kerala leaders and around eight former heads of the state unit. Even ten days after the election results were announced, the Congress leadership has yet to finalize a candidate for the Chief Minister position. The United Democratic Front (UDF) performed exceptionally well in the elections, securing over 102 seats, far exceeding the majority. Due to protests from grassroots party workers, the leadership has opted to consult with state leaders before making a final decision on the next Chief Minister.

Candidates in the Running for Chief Minister

The race for the state's top position intensified when K.C. Venugopal, the influential general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), announced his candidacy. He has garnered support from a majority of Congress legislators. Additionally, V.D. Satheesan, the outgoing leader of the opposition in the Kerala assembly, and senior party figure Ramesh Chennithala are also vying for the position. Satheesan is backed by Congress allies within the UDF and enjoys substantial support from the public and grassroots party workers.

Congress's Growing Influence in Southern States

Kerala marks the fourth southern state where Congress has gained power, following victories in Karnataka and Telangana, and a coalition government in Tamil Nadu with the DMK. Sources indicate that the decision-making process may face further delays due to Sonia Gandhi's health issues, as she was taken to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for routine check-ups.
