Rahul Gandhi Reflects on His Tenure

On Friday, Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP, celebrated two years as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, pledging to continue fighting for critical issues from the streets to Parliament. He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing significant topics such as NEET and the protection of the Constitution. In a post on the social media platform 'X', Gandhi reflected on his tenure, stating, 'Today marks two years since I became the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Each day of these two years has been dedicated to one mission – amplifying the voices of every Indian in the corridors of power.'

Commitment to Key Issues

He highlighted his efforts to support students aspiring to pursue medical studies and to expose electoral fraud. 'Whether it’s fighting for NEET students, uncovering electoral malpractices, or safeguarding the Constitution, I have stood with you on every front, I am with you today, and I will always be,' he emphasized. Gandhi stressed that public support has been the driving force behind his work, stating, 'From the streets to Parliament, your trust is my greatest strength. The journey is long, but my resolve remains the same – I will continue to fight for you.'

A Historic Appointment

Following the general elections in June 2024, Gandhi's appointment marked the end of a decade-long vacancy for the Leader of the Opposition position during the 16th and 17th sessions of the Lok Sabha. According to parliamentary rules, a party must hold at least one-tenth of the 543 seats (55 seats) to qualify for this position; the Congress party surpassed this threshold by winning 99 seats in 2024.

A Significant Role for Gandhi

This role represents Gandhi's first formal constitutional position since entering politics in 2004. Additionally, he becomes the third member of the Gandhi family to hold this position, following Sonia Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
