Rahul Gandhi Energizes Congress Workers Ahead of UP Assembly Elections
Rallying Support in Amethi
In a bid to invigorate party members ahead of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP, emphasized his deep-rooted connection to Amethi. Speaking to Congress workers in the village of Tezipur, he affirmed that he would heed the wishes of the local populace as the elections approach.
Gandhi highlighted his family's long-standing ties to Amethi, stating, “This is my home, my family, and my place of work. Rajiv, Sonia, Priyanka, and I have all been connected to Amethi. I have also served as an MP from here. In the future, I will do whatever you all ask of me.”
Acknowledging Local Sentiments
Before his speech, Rahul Gandhi referenced the emotional address by Kishori Lal Sharma, the Congress MP from Amethi, and reiterated his commitment to respecting the feelings of the local residents. Sharma expressed his belief that he is merely a servant to the people and urged Gandhi to once again represent Amethi in Parliament.
Sharma noted that the Gandhi family still holds a special place in the hearts of the villagers. Rahul Gandhi served as the MP for Amethi from 2004 to 2019 but faced defeat in the 2019 general elections against BJP leader Smriti Irani.
Challenges Ahead for Congress
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kishori Lal Sharma managed to defeat Smriti Irani in Amethi, but the Congress party faces significant challenges ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. In the 2022 assembly elections, Congress failed to secure any of the five assembly seats within the Amethi parliamentary constituency, with three seats going to the BJP and two to the Samajwadi Party.
Rahul Gandhi's increased activity in Amethi is seen as part of the preparations for the upcoming assembly elections. Recently, he visited the home of the late Yogendra Mishra, a former district president of Congress, to express condolences to the grieving family.
Prior to Gandhi's arrival, members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha protested at the district headquarters in Gauriganj, chanting slogans against Congress, Gandhi, and Kishori Lal Sharma.
