Intensifying Political Discourse in Punjab Ahead of 2027 Elections

Chandigarh: As the political landscape in Punjab heats up in anticipation of the 2027 Assembly elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has taken a strong stance against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. During the 'Insaf Rally' held in Sangrur on Wednesday, Gandhi targeted Mann, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of failing to address the drug crisis in the state.

'The Smell of Alcohol at 11 AM'

While addressing the rally, Gandhi recounted his experiences in the Lok Sabha, where Mann would sit nearby and share jokes. He alleged that even at 11 AM, the smell of alcohol was evident from Mann's breath.

Gandhi emphasized that while drinking may be a personal choice, a chief minister should remain sober when leading a state that is battling substance abuse. He stated that Punjab requires a leader who understands the struggles of its people.

Critique of AAP's Handling of Drug Issues

Gandhi raised concerns about the increasing drug trade in Punjab, questioning the AAP government's commitment to eradicating drugs, a promise made before they came to power. He criticized the government for not fulfilling this pledge.

He pointed out that synthetic drugs have become a significant issue in Punjab, stressing the need for industrial and infrastructural development to provide better job opportunities for the youth, thereby reducing the allure of drugs and gang violence.

Attacks on Amit Shah and PM Modi

Gandhi also directed his criticism towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning the central government's actions against drug trafficking. He raised the issue of drugs seized from Adani's port and asked what measures had been taken in response.

Furthermore, he challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage in a public debate on any platform.

Reference to Sidhu Moosewala's Father

During the rally, Gandhi mentioned his meeting with Balkaur Singh, the father of the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. He noted that this encounter influenced his speech, prompting him to address the issues of Moosewala's murder and the need for improved security in Punjab.

In summary, Gandhi's rally in Sangrur highlighted pressing issues such as drug abuse, gang violence, law and order, and employment, while also scrutinizing the performance of the Bhagwant Mann government.
