Urgent Need for a Robust Flood Management System

New Delhi, July 27 - In light of the devastating floods in Assam, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, urged on Monday for the establishment of a system that prioritizes scientific prevention, early warning, robust infrastructure, and rehabilitation. This initiative aims to prevent the recurrence of such disasters year after year. Officials reported that the death toll from the floods in Assam has risen to 68 this year, affecting over 524,000 individuals across five districts.

In a post on 'X', Rahul expressed his sorrow over the tragic loss of life due to the floods in Assam. He stated, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the grieving families. My deepest sympathies are with the millions affected by this disaster.”

The Congress leader emphasized the expectation that both state and central governments will spare no effort in providing relief and rescue operations for those impacted. He noted that floods occur annually, leading to significant loss of life and property, displacing numerous families.

Rahul stated, “It is time we establish a strong and sustainable system to tackle floods. A system that emphasizes scientific prevention, early warning, robust infrastructure, and rehabilitation to ensure that people do not have to face such tragedies every year.”

According to officials, a total of 354 relief camps and aid distribution centers have been set up across four districts, providing shelter to 37,724 individuals. Various agencies, including the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire and emergency services, and police, are actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts.
