Rahul Gandhi Advocates for Student Voices Amidst Lok Sabha Discourse

During a session in the Lok Sabha, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi expressed that if BJP leaders were to inquire with their children about the ongoing student protests, they would discover that their offspring stand in solidarity with the demonstrators. He conveyed his excitement and confidence in the future of the nation, emphasizing that the sentiments displayed on the streets were not rooted in anger, violence, or hatred. Instead, they represented a profound expression of the feelings of the youth and the upcoming generation. He urged all political parties, including his friends in the BJP, to honor this sentiment.

 

Gandhi asserted that he is certain that if his BJP colleagues ask their children about their siblings' actions, they would receive support from them as well. He stated that there is nothing wrong with what has transpired, and every Indian should take pride in it. Referring to a young woman who had shared her thoughts with him, he highlighted that 'idiots' do not listen to the youth. This remark sparked a commotion from the ruling party, prompting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to request Gandhi to stay on topic.

 

In response to the uproar, Gandhi clarified that he was merely defining the term 'student' and was not targeting anyone specifically. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, he mentioned that the protests led by the youth have instilled confidence in him, describing them as a deep expression of the aspirations of the country's younger generation. He emphasized that these protests are not driven by violence or hatred and called upon all political parties, including the BJP, to respect the students' expressions.

 

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and members of the ruling party raised objections to Gandhi's use of terms like 'idiots' and 'blind followers.' Gandhi clarified that these comments were not directed at the government and requested the Speaker to remove them from the record. He reiterated that if BJP leaders were to ask their children about the protests, they would find that their children agree with the young protesters.

 

Amidst the chaos in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi defended his use of the term 'idiot,' stating that it is only considered unparliamentary when directed at another member of parliament. He clarified that he did not intend the term for any specific individual. Gandhi told the Speaker that if the BJP wishes to speak, he would remain silent and take a seat.
