New Delhi, Jul 27: On Monday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, emphasized the necessity for a sustainable solution to the persistent flooding issues in Assam, advocating for a comprehensive system to avert such disasters annually.

In a heartfelt social media post in Hindi, Gandhi expressed sorrow over the fatalities caused by this year's floods, offering condolences to the grieving families and sympathy to the millions impacted throughout the state.

He stated, "The tragic loss of lives due to the catastrophic floods in Assam is profoundly distressing. I extend my sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones. My thoughts are with the countless individuals affected by this calamity."

Highlighting the annual recurrence of floods in Assam, which leads to extensive damage and displaces numerous families, the Congress leader urged the nation to move beyond temporary measures.

"It is imperative that we develop a strong and enduring system to combat the flood crisis. This system should focus on scientific prevention, early warning systems, robust infrastructure, and rehabilitation efforts, ensuring that communities do not have to endure such tragedies repeatedly," Gandhi remarked.

He expressed optimism that both the central government and the Assam administration would diligently pursue relief and rescue efforts for those impacted.

Gandhi's comments coincided with the Assam government's transition from emergency response to restoration and rehabilitation as the flood situation improved.

On Sunday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that ministers would be dispatched to flood-affected districts immediately after the current Assembly session to oversee restoration efforts.

"Following the conclusion of the Assembly session, ministers from all departments will visit the impacted areas to carry out sector-specific restoration tasks, including repairing schools, restoring healthcare services, rebuilding rural infrastructure, and expediting rehabilitation," Sarma stated.

Meanwhile, there is a growing demand for the recognition of Assam's ongoing flood and erosion crisis as a national concern.

In support of this, Auniati Satra Satradhikar Dr. Pitambar Dev Goswami urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the flood-affected regions to witness the extent of the devastation firsthand.

"Prime Minister Modi has visited Assam multiple times, but I implore him to come now. He should listen to the people's pleas and see their suffering. The destruction caused by the floods in Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo is unparalleled," Goswami remarked.

This appeal follows the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) reiterating its long-standing demand for the state's flood and erosion crisis to be recognized as a national issue.

As per official reports released on Monday, this year's floods have resulted in 68 fatalities, with over 524,000 individuals affected across five districts, despite a significant improvement in the overall situation. Authorities are currently managing 354 relief camps and aid distribution centers across four districts, providing shelter to 37,724 displaced individuals.
