New Leadership in Afghanistan Cricket

Afghanistan has appointed Rahmat Shah as the new captain for both their ODI and Test teams following Hashmatullah Shahidi's resignation from the leadership position, as reported by the ICC.

Rahmat, who debuted internationally in 2013, brings a wealth of experience, having played in 128 ODIs and 12 Tests. He previously served as Shahidi's deputy during a successful period for Afghanistan cricket, which included a commendable performance at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. The team narrowly missed out on the knockout stage, achieving significant victories against England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands. Additionally, they made history by qualifying for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 for the first time.

In conjunction with Rahmat's captaincy, Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been appointed as the vice-captain for both formats. Rahmat Shah's inaugural challenge as captain will be the upcoming ODI series against Ireland, set to commence on August 5.

Shahidi's Resignation Announcement

Shahidi made his resignation public via a social media post on Wednesday, without detailing the reasons behind his decision.

"Today, I respectfully announce my resignation as captain, a personal decision. It has been a tremendous honor to lead this team. I take pride in having served with integrity, unity, and dedication. Thanks to the efforts of our officials, coaches, and players, we have celebrated numerous victories, triumphed over formidable opponents, and elevated the team's reputation," Shahidi stated, as quoted by the ICC.
