This article explores the implications of his changing image and the significance of social media in political dissent.

Raghav Chadha's Shift to BJP Sparks Controversy

Raghav Chadha, who recently transitioned from the Aam Aadmi Party to the Bharatiya Janata Party, is currently encountering unexpected opposition. Without taking to the streets, supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party and Arvind Kejriwal are expressing their dissent through the unfollow button on social media. Once celebrated as the 'poster boy' of Kejriwal's party, Chadha is now grappling with the harsh reality of his new political affiliation. A significant segment of the youth, particularly from Generation Z, is distancing themselves from him.

Chadha was well-liked among the youth for his calm, composed, and modern persona. Transitioning from a chartered accountant to a politician, his relatable demeanor, akin to that of a Blinkit delivery person, made him appear more accessible than a traditional leader. However, experts suggest that his sudden political shift is perceived by the youth as a return to 'old and dirty politics.'

Whether it was his viral video about ordering from 'Blinkit' or discussing everyday issues, Raghav Chadha was seen as a 'neighborhood guy' rather than a distant politician. His association with actress Parineeti Chopra further fueled curiosity and attraction towards him. Following their marriage, Chadha's image morphed into that of a glamorous leader, yet the very generation that once idolized him seems to be pulling away.

What is causing this shift in perception?
Experts indicate that image in politics is extremely fragile. According to a report, Ajay Goodvarti, an associate professor of political science at JNU, stated, "Young MPs are often expected to usher in a new culture of public morality and clean politics. Chadha had crafted his image as a leader concerned with the common people's issues, but recent political developments and his absence or role have disappointed his young supporters."

Professor Goodvarti further explains that Generation Z is particularly sensitive to political actions that seem to prioritize 'personal privilege' over idealism. If they perceive a leader as abandoning their principles for 'old and dirty politics,' they are quick to withdraw their support.

Unfollowing as a New Form of Protest
In the digital realm, unfollowing is not merely a technical action; it serves as a political statement. This method allows individuals to express their disagreement quietly, without causing a stir or engaging in debates. While gaining viral attention online is relatively easy, maintaining positive popularity is a significant challenge. The online persona Chadha built is now under scrutiny with every move he makes. A decline in followers on social media indicates the necessity of remaining transparent and relevant to sustain credibility in the digital space.
