R Sridhar Appointed as Sri Lanka Men's Team Fielding Coach Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026
R Sridhar Takes on New Coaching Role
R Sridhar, a former cricketer and fielding coach for India, has been appointed as the fielding coach for the Sri Lanka men's cricket team until the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2026, which is set to take place from February 7 to March 8. Previously, Sridhar held the position of senior fielding coach for the Indian men's team from 2014 to 2021. He is a Level 3 certified coach recognized by the BCCI and conducted a 10-day fielding program for Sri Lanka's elite teams in Colombo last May.
Sridhar's Vision for Sri Lanka's Fielding
In his new role, Sridhar expressed his commitment to creating an environment that enhances the natural athleticism, awareness, and pride of Sri Lankan players. He emphasized the importance of building on their traditional strengths, such as quick hands, sharp reflexes, and fearless play. "Sri Lankan players are known for their instinctive brilliance and resilience. My aim is not to enforce a rigid system but to cultivate an atmosphere where athleticism and pride can flourish organically," he stated following his appointment.
Coaching Changes Amid Fielding Issues
Sridhar's appointment is part of a broader coaching reshuffle within the Sri Lanka men's team, which also saw Julian Wood join as batting coach and Rene Ferdinands as spin bowling coach in October. This restructuring follows a disappointing performance in the Asia Cup and the tour of Pakistan, where fielding errors were a significant concern. Sridhar will collaborate with the men's team in preparation for upcoming series against Pakistan and England, with his role already active.
New National Selection Committee Formed
Furthermore, former fast bowler Pramodya Wickramasinghe has been appointed to lead Sri Lanka's new national selection committee, which will oversee both the men's and women's senior teams. The committee also includes former cricketers Vinothen John, Indika de Saram, Rasanjali Chandima Silva, and Tharanga Paranavitana.
