Quad Nations Strengthen Cooperation at Key Foreign Ministers' Meeting in India
Significant Quad Meeting Held in India
On Tuesday, a crucial meeting of the foreign ministers from the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) nations took place in India. This high-level gathering emphasized that the Quad has evolved beyond merely a platform for discussions; it is now a robust center for taking practical and concrete actions to address global and regional challenges. The meeting was chaired by India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, with participation from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japan's Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
Marco Rubio Addresses the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting
In his address, Marco Rubio expressed gratitude to Minister Jaishankar and the Indian government for hosting not only the bilateral visit over the past three days but also this significant meeting. He noted that shortly after taking office as Secretary of State, his first meeting was with the Quad, highlighting the commitment to this process. Over the past year, the collective goal has been to transform this platform from one of mere dialogue into one that actively addresses issues with concrete steps. He emphasized that the areas of cooperation have become increasingly relevant due to recent global events, and he anticipates further progress in enhancing relationships in these sectors.
Focus on the Indo-Pacific Region
Dr. S. Jaishankar stated, "We will discuss our joint activities and make decisions, clearly considering various global challenges and opportunities. Our focus will be on the Indo-Pacific, which is the specific domain of the Quad. Globally, we need to address issues such as strengthening supply chains, key connectivity points, manufacturing, resource accumulation, and infrastructure deficiencies. Each of these aspects presents a new rationale for enhancing partnerships, robust development, and fulfilling technological promises. Additionally, the Indo-Pacific has its unique concerns that require strategic trust, maritime security, promoting economic options, and fostering a spirit of cooperation through reliable and transparent partnerships."
Japan's Commitment to Quad Cooperation
During the meeting, Japan's Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi remarked that the Quad sends a strong message to the world about its commitment to promoting cooperation for a free and open Indo-Pacific. He emphasized the need for Indo-Pacific nations to strengthen their resilience and necessary capabilities, including economic security, to determine their future. Motegi expressed hope for open discussions on all issues, including accelerating Quad cooperation.
