Quad Alliance Strengthens Indo-Pacific Ties Amid Rising Tensions
Strengthening Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific
New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Quad alliance announced an expansion of its collaboration in critical minerals and energy, alongside new initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime surveillance and port infrastructure throughout the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in response to China's increasing military assertiveness.
These initiatives were revealed after a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Quad nations held in New Delhi. The session was led by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and included US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
Jaishankar noted that a significant portion of the discussions revolved around the current global situation, emphasizing the importance of the Indo-Pacific region.
As four maritime democracies situated at various points in the Indo-Pacific, the exchange of viewpoints proved to be highly beneficial, he remarked.
The ministers dedicated time to discussing the importance of safe and unobstructed maritime trade, reaffirming the necessity of adhering to international law.
Jaishankar highlighted that a free and open Indo-Pacific encompasses multiple dimensions, and the Quad meeting reviewed advancements in several areas.
He expressed a strong belief in promoting economic resilience and strengthening supply chains, mentioning that discussions also included the availability of energy, fertilizers, and critical minerals.
Looking ahead, he stated that the Indo-Pacific will gain even greater significance for global activities, including economic, energy, and maritime trade, which will consequently increase the responsibilities of the Quad.
Counter-terrorism efforts were also a key topic during the discussions, with Jaishankar asserting that there should be zero tolerance for terrorism and that nations facing such threats have the right to defend themselves.
In a media briefing, Secretary of State Rubio announced the launch of an Indo-Pacific Maritime Surveillance Cooperation Initiative, which aims to utilize the maritime surveillance capabilities of each Quad member.
He also revealed the expansion of the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness Initiative among the Quad countries and introduced a new initiative to enhance port infrastructure in the Pacific Islands.
