Qatar Expels Iranian Officials Amid Rising Tensions Following Missile Strikes
Qatar's Diplomatic Action Against Iran
In a significant escalation of diplomatic tensions, Qatar has expelled high-ranking Iranian military and security personnel, along with their teams, following missile attacks on critical energy infrastructure in the Gulf region. The Qatari Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that it has declared the military and security attachés at the Iranian embassy as persona non grata, mandating their departure within 24 hours. The official statement emphasized that Qatar has formally communicated this decision to the Iranian embassy.
This decision followed a meeting between Qatar’s protocol chief, Ibrahim Yousif Fakhro, and Iran’s ambassador to Doha, Ali Salehabadi. Officials indicated that the expulsion was a response to what they termed repeated Iranian provocations and blatant aggression against Qatar, accusing Tehran of infringing upon the nation’s sovereignty and violating international law. Qatar has warned that any further hostile actions could lead to additional measures to protect its sovereignty and national interests.
In the wake of missile strikes on Ras Laffan Industrial City, a crucial gas processing facility, Qatar’s Interior Ministry reported that emergency teams were dispatched to manage fires caused by the attacks. QatarEnergy confirmed that the site sustained considerable damage but noted that all personnel were safe and no casualties occurred. The company stated, “Ras Laffan Industrial City was subjected to missile attacks this evening. Emergency response teams were immediately mobilized to contain the fires. Extensive damage has been reported, but all personnel are safe and no casualties have been recorded.”
Qatar has labeled the missile attacks as a serious escalation and a direct threat to its national security and the stability of the region.
