PV Sindhu's World Championship Journey Ends in Quarterfinals Against Wang Zhi Yi

PV Sindhu's pursuit of her second World title came to a disappointing end as she lost to China's Wang Zhi Yi in the quarterfinals of the BWF World Badminton Championships. Despite a valiant effort, Sindhu's defeat marks her seventh consecutive year without a medal at this prestigious event. The match showcased her resilience, but questions arose regarding her opponent's tactics amid injury concerns. With this loss, Sindhu's hopes of winning on home soil were dashed, leaving fans eager for her next performance.

Sindhu's Bid for Glory Cut Short

Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu's ambition to secure her second World title has been thwarted following a narrow defeat to China's Wang Zhi Yi in the women's singles quarterfinals at the BWF World Badminton Championships, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on August 20.

Sindhu, the 2019 World Champion, faced a challenging match against Wang, who battled through cramps towards the end of the deciding game but managed to secure a hard-fought win. The 30-year-old initially lost the first set 11-21 but rallied back to take the second game 21-15, forcing a decisive third set.

Wang's Composure Seals the Match

Despite her physical struggles, Wang maintained her composure in the final game, ultimately edging out Sindhu with a score of 21-17, thus advancing to the semifinals.

A Continued Medal Drought for Sindhu

This defeat marks the seventh consecutive year that PV Sindhu has failed to medal at the BWF World Championships. Her last podium finish was in 2019 when she clinched gold in Basel, Switzerland.

Since then, she has reached the quarterfinals three times in 2021, 2025, and 2026. The tournament was not held in 2020 and 2024 due to the Olympic Games. In the last edition, Sindhu was eliminated by Putri Kusuma Wardani in the quarterfinals in Paris.

Sindhu's Historic Achievements

Throughout her World Championships career, PV Sindhu has earned two silver medals in 2017 and 2018, two bronze medals in 2013 and 2014, and one gold medal in 2019, making her one of the most decorated players in the tournament's history. She remains the only Indian shuttler to have won five medals at this prestigious event.

Despite being a strong contender for the title this year on home turf, Sindhu fell short against the resilient Wang Zhi Yi, missing out on a podium finish in front of her supporters.

Sindhu Questions Opponent's Strategy

In the aftermath of her quarterfinal exit, PV Sindhu addressed reporters, expressing uncertainty about Wang Zhi Yi's physical condition during the match. She speculated whether Wang's apparent discomfort was genuine or a tactical maneuver.

Sindhu remarked, "I don't know if she is injured or not. Maybe that is her strategy or her way of doing it. You never know. Maybe that's her gameplay. I had to be very focused and patient on every point. I felt the last three points changed the game, and I should have been a bit more patient."

Other Indian Players' Performances

Prior to Sindhu's exit, Ayush Shetty was unable to qualify for the semifinals, while the women's doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand kept India's hopes alive by advancing to the quarterfinals.
