Sindhu Secures Semifinal Spot

Ranked 10th in the world, PV Sindhu has successfully reached the semifinals of the ongoing Australian Open at the Quaycentre in Sydney. She achieved this by defeating Chen Su Yu from Chinese Taipei with a commanding performance.


The match, which lasted only 27 minutes, saw Sindhu dominate both games, concluding with scores of 21-6 and 21-9. This victory marks her second semifinal appearance this season, following her earlier success at the Malaysia Open 2026.

In the semifinals, Sindhu will face off against Akane Yamaguchi, the top seed and three-time world champion. This will be their 29th encounter, with Sindhu leading their head-to-head record at 15-13. However, Yamaguchi has triumphed in four of their last five meetings.

Yamaguchi secured her spot in the semifinals by defeating India's Tanvi Sharma with a score of 21-14, 21-14 in a match that lasted 32 minutes. In men's doubles, the Indian duo of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun had to retire during the second game against their opponents from Chinese Taipei.


Sindhu's Path to the Quarterfinals

Earlier in the tournament, Sindhu overcame her fellow Indian Isharani Baruah with a score of 22-20, 21-12 in a match that lasted 42 minutes. The first game was fiercely contested, with Sindhu edging it in a tie-break, before she dominated the second game to secure her quarterfinal spot.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Tanvi Sharma showcased her talent by defeating senior player Malvika Bansod with a score of 21-13, 21-15 in another all-Indian match. This victory marks her second quarterfinal appearance this season, highlighting her rising prominence in the international badminton scene.
