Putin and Xi Jinping Set for Key Meeting Amid Growing China-Russia Relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for a crucial two-day meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing next week. This visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship and highlights the strengthening ties between the two nations, particularly in light of Russia's isolation following its invasion of Ukraine. The discussions will cover bilateral relations and key international issues. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to navigate its ongoing conflict with Russia, including recent prisoner exchanges and drone attacks. This meeting could have significant implications for global geopolitics.

Upcoming Meeting Between Putin and Xi Jinping

Next week, Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit Beijing for a two-day meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as announced by the Kremlin on Saturday. This news follows closely on the heels of U.S. President Donald Trump's recent state visit to China, where he engaged in discussions with Xi regarding trade and the ongoing conflict involving the U.S. and Israel in Iran.

Kremlin Highlights 25 Years of Friendship

The Kremlin's statement indicated that Putin's visit, set for May 19-20, is timed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship established in 2001. The agenda for the meeting includes discussions on bilateral relations, significant international and regional matters, and economic collaboration.

Strengthening Ties Amid Global Tensions

In recent years, the relationship between China and Russia has strengthened, particularly following Russia's extensive invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, which has left Moscow increasingly isolated internationally and dependent on Beijing for trade due to sanctions imposed by the West. During Putin's visit to China in September 2025, Xi referred to him as an 'old friend,' while Putin reciprocated with the term 'dear friend.'

Additionally, Putin is expected to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, in November.

Recent Developments in Ukraine

On Saturday, Ukraine successfully repatriated the remains of its fallen soldiers following a prisoner exchange with Russia. According to Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Russia returned 528 bodies that it claims may belong to Ukrainian servicemen. Experts will now undertake the necessary steps to identify these repatriated individuals.

Continued POW Exchanges

This repatriation follows a recent exchange where Russia and Ukraine swapped 205 prisoners of war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that this was just the first phase of a larger plan to exchange 1,000 POWs from each side, with some Ukrainians having been detained by Russia since 2022 and involved in some of the conflict's most intense battles.

Russian Drone Strikes on Odesa

In other news, Russia conducted drone strikes on Ukraine's southern Odesa region overnight, targeting a five-story apartment building and a one-story residential structure, resulting in injuries to two individuals, according to regional authorities. The city’s port also sustained damage during the attacks. Ukraine's Air Force reported that out of 294 drones launched by Russia, 269 were intercepted.

Ukrainian Drone Attacks Reported in Russia

Conversely, Russia's Ministry of Defense reported that its forces shot down 138 Ukrainian drones across 14 regions, including Moscow. Attacks from Ukraine resulted in civilian casualties in Russia's Belgorod region, where two individuals lost their lives due to drone strikes on vehicles and homes.
