Putin and Trump Discuss India-Pakistan Conflict During Recent Call
Key Discussion Points Between Putin and Trump
In a recent phone conversation, Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the military tensions between India and Pakistan, which were reportedly eased due to Trump's direct involvement, according to a senior official in Moscow.
Yuri Ushakov, a prominent aide to Putin, shared this information during a press briefing following the 70-minute discussion held on Wednesday.
This marks the first instance where Russia has acknowledged Trump's influence in de-escalating the conflict between India and Pakistan. Trump has consistently claimed credit for reducing tensions, a statement that has faced skepticism from India.
Ushakov noted that while the primary agenda of the call was centered on Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine, other geopolitical matters, including the situation in the Middle East and the India-Pakistan conflict, were also on the table.
He stated, “The armed conflict between India and Pakistan was discussed, which has been paused thanks to President Trump's personal involvement.”
The situation between New Delhi and Islamabad intensified on May 7, when the Indian military executed strikes, dubbed Operation Sindoor, targeting what it identified as terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
This military action was a response to a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals on April 22.
In retaliation, the Pakistan Army launched shelling against Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the deaths of at least 22 Indian civilians and seven military personnel.
On May 10, both nations reached an agreement to cease hostilities after four days of conflict.
India's announcement to halt military actions came shortly after Trump claimed on social media that both countries had agreed to a ceasefire.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also indicated that India and Pakistan had consented to initiate discussions on a range of issues at a neutral location.
However, India has asserted that the decision to cease fire was made independently and without U.S. intervention, emphasizing that trade discussions were not part of the dialogue with U.S. leaders.
On Thursday, the Congress party urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clarify Trump's role in the cessation of hostilities.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh remarked on X, stating, “Yury Ushakov has disclosed that the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan was a topic during the 75-minute call between Presidents Putin and Trump on June 4, highlighting Trump's personal involvement in halting the hostilities.”
