Punjab Police Raids Former Minister's Home Amid Controversial Incident
Police Action Against Former Minister
On Monday, Punjab police conducted a raid at the residence of former minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, Bikram Singh Majithia, in Amritsar. This operation was linked to an incident at the Majitha police station, where there was an alleged attempt to free a prisoner from police custody. Authorities confirmed that teams were dispatched to apprehend Majithia and other individuals named in the FIR.
Details of the Raid
The police operation concluded without any arrests, as Majithia was reportedly not present at his home when the police arrived. According to law enforcement, he was part of a group that attempted to liberate a detainee named Jobanpreet from the police station on Sunday. The Punjab police accused the mob of breaching the police station premises, causing a disturbance, damaging public property, and forcibly releasing the detained individual, raising significant concerns regarding public safety and law enforcement.
Police Statement on the Incident
Senior Superintendent of Police Sohel Meer informed reporters that on May 30, in connection with case number 90 registered at the Majitha police station, Jobanpreet was arrested and formally taken into custody. During the interrogation, a crowd gathered outside the police station around 11:30 AM, attempting to free him. They allegedly entered the police station illegally and threatened the officers.
Meer elaborated that the group searched several rooms within the police station and entered the interrogation room. They threatened the officers with weapons, damaged some case files, and forcibly released the detainee. The Station House Officer (SHO) and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) arrived on the scene and attempted to negotiate, but the crowd tried to pull Jobanpreet away. However, the police managed to re-arrest him and placed him back in custody.
Ongoing Investigations
SSP Meer stated that a case has been registered in response to this incident, and raids are being conducted at various locations. The police are working to apprehend the culprits swiftly. While six suspects have been identified so far, authorities are in the process of identifying additional individuals involved. Bikram Singh Majithia was also noted to be part of the unlawful assembly.
