Punjab Local Body Elections: Counting Begins Amid Tight Security
Counting of Votes for Local Body Elections in Punjab
The counting of votes for the local body elections in Punjab commenced at 8 AM on Friday, under strict security measures. Today, the fate of 102 local bodies in the state will be determined. These elections are considered crucial ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for next year.
On May 26, voting took place via ballot for eight municipal corporations—Mohali, Bathinda, Abohar, Barnala, Kapurthala, Moga, Batala, and Pathankot—along with 75 municipal councils and 19 nagar panchayats, totaling 102 local bodies.
Voter turnout for these elections was recorded at 63.94%. A total of 7,554 candidates contested in the local body elections. These elections hold significant importance for major political parties in Punjab, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), as they prepare for the upcoming assembly elections.
Officials have stated that two micro observers have been appointed at each counting center, working under the direct supervision of the general observer for the respective district. Only authorized personnel will be allowed entry into the counting hall. Previously, opposition parties accused the AAP government of misusing government machinery during the elections. These local body elections are viewed as a litmus test for the ruling party, which aims to maintain its power in the state.
