Punjab Kings Face Fourth Straight Loss in IPL 2026 Against Delhi Capitals
Punjab Kings' Struggles Continue
In the IPL 2026, Punjab Kings faced their fourth consecutive defeat, losing to Delhi Capitals by three wickets at HPCA Stadium on Monday. Following the match, PBKS spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule addressed the media, stating, "We started off strong, and while we've lost the last four matches, we are still in contention for playoff qualification. There will be ups and downs, and moments where we almost clinch victory but fall short, as we did today. We had the game in our grasp but failed to execute our skills in the final five overs. Our focus now is to put this behind us and perform our best in the next three matches."
Delhi Capitals' Lower Order Shines
Chasing a target of 211, Delhi Capitals bounced back from a precarious 74/4, thanks to captain Axar Patel's impressive 56 runs off 33 balls and David Miller's explosive 51 off 28. The duo contributed 64 runs rapidly. Despite losing wickets late in the innings, the lower order held their composure. Ashutosh Sharma played a vital role with 24 runs off 10 balls, while Madhav Tiwari remained not out at 18 off eight balls, and Auqib Nabi added 10 runs off just two balls, leading DC to a total of 216/7 in 19 overs, keeping their playoff aspirations alive.
Punjab Kings Set a Competitive Score
Earlier in the match, Punjab Kings scored 210/5, propelled by a strong start from Priyansh Arya, who made 56 runs off 33 balls, alongside Prabhsimran Singh. Captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with an unbeaten 59 runs off 36 balls, while Suryansh Shedge contributed a quick 21*. In the bowling department for DC, Mukesh Kumar took 1 wicket for 31 runs in 4 overs, and Madhav claimed 2 wickets for 40 runs in 4 overs. Notably, there were no overs bowled by spinners, as DC opted for a pace-heavy attack, and PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer did not utilize the tournament's leading wicket-taker, Yuzvendra Chahal.
Coach Discusses All-Pace Strategy
This match marked only the second instance in IPL history where all overs were bowled by pace bowlers. The first occurrence was during a match between RCB and CSK in 2008, which lasted 39.4 overs. Regarding Chahal's absence from the bowling attack, Bahutule explained, "We considered it during the timeout, but the conditions favored fast bowlers, so the decision to stick with them was made spontaneously. We managed to take early wickets, but one partnership shifted the momentum away from us."
Dropped Catches Prove Costly
Bahutule highlighted areas of concern for PBKS, stating, "We need to analyze certain phases of our bowling and fielding. Unfortunately, we dropped several crucial catches at key moments, which was significant. We will reflect on this, but we don't have time to dwell on it now."
Points Table Impact
With this victory, Delhi Capitals climbed to seventh place in the points table, securing five wins from 12 matches. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings, despite their fourth consecutive loss, remained in fourth position.
