Punjab Congress Leadership Dynamics
Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding announced on Friday that he will not attend the upcoming meeting between AICC General Secretary in charge Bhupesh Baghel and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. This meeting is scheduled for Saturday and follows reports of internal disagreements between Channi and Sukjinder Singh Randhawa, particularly after Wadding's absence from a previous gathering.
In a conversation with the media, Wadding expressed concerns that discussions at the meeting might be directed against him, attributing the discord within the Punjab Congress to leadership changes. As the state Congress chief, he feels it is better for the meeting to proceed without his presence. He stated, 'Sometimes, individuals may not express themselves openly in person, which can lead to misunderstandings. It’s best they hold the meeting without me. We are all united, and minor issues can be resolved through dialogue with leadership. I have no issues with anyone, and I respect senior leaders as if they were my own family.'
Earlier in the day, Wadding revealed that Baghel had informed him about the meeting and expressed a desire to discuss matters privately before the larger conversation. Wadding noted that while he was aware of the meeting's scheduling, he lacked details regarding the venue or arrangements. He mentioned, 'Baghel indicated that he would like to talk privately first, and then we would sit down for discussions. I believe you will see us all on the same platform in the next couple of days. Just name one senior leader who has said they are unwilling to accept the president.'
Despite the internal rifts, Raja Wadding remains optimistic that the Punjab Congress unit will stay united ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. The meeting between Baghel and Channi is expected to address these issues and foster unity within the party.
