Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Voices Concerns Over Proposed Seed Act to Amit Shah

Meeting with Union Home Minister

On Saturday, Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the capital to express the state government's opposition to the proposed Seed Act. The central government intends to introduce this legislation to amend the existing 1966 law during the upcoming budget session. Following the meeting, Mann emphasized that as an agrarian state, Punjab should be consulted on any laws related to seeds and agriculture.

Concerns Raised by CM Mann

In an interview, Mann stated, 'We met with Amit Shah and voiced our opposition to the Seed Act. Punjab is an agricultural state, and if the legislation does not involve Punjab in decisions about which seeds should be planted, how can such a law be enacted?' He also pointed out that Punjab already has its own Seed Act in place.

Discussion on SYL Canal and Agricultural Issues

Mann raised the long-standing issue of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, reiterating the state's position that there is no additional water available. He further discussed matters related to food and civil supplies, including the procurement of wheat and rice for the upcoming season. The Chief Minister expressed concerns regarding the appointment of the General Manager of the Food Corporation of India (FCI), noting that this position has traditionally been held by an officer from Punjab. He insisted that a representative from Punjab should be appointed, someone who understands the local culture and markets.

Call for Release of Rural Development Fund

Additionally, Mann demanded the release of pending amounts from the Rural Development Fund (RDF), highlighting its critical importance for the development of roads leading to the markets.
