Pune Protests Erupt Over Gruesome Crime Against Young Girl: What’s Next?
Outrage in Pune Following Tragic Incident
Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets in Pune, blocking the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway for approximately four hours in response to the horrific rape and murder of a four-year-old girl. The protest occurred on Saturday evening, where family members and supporters placed the victim's body on the road near Navale Bridge, demanding severe punishment for the 65-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the crime.
Footage from the scene showed significant traffic congestion on the highway as the protest unfolded.
The girl's last rites were conducted at the Vaikunt crematorium shortly after midnight, under heavy police presence.
According to law enforcement, the accused, a laborer with a prior criminal history, allegedly enticed the girl with food on Friday in the Bhor tehsil of Pune district. He then took her to a cattle pen, where he reportedly assaulted her and subsequently killed her by striking her with a stone.
The suspect was apprehended after police reviewed CCTV footage from a nearby residence, which showed him with the child.
Charges have been filed against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and he is currently in police custody until May 7.
Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Sunetra Pawar, visited the victim's family on Saturday, promising them that strict measures would be taken against the perpetrator and that the trial would be expedited.
Pawar condemned the incident as 'shocking' and a 'blot on humanity,' reaffirming the government's commitment to supporting the victim's family and ensuring justice.
She also communicated with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, advocating for a fast-track court trial to ensure the accused faces the maximum penalty.
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde instructed Pune rural police to compile solid evidence to construct a robust case and expedite the trial process, emphasizing the need for the death penalty for the accused.
