The End of a Terror: Gurpreet Singh's Killing Spree

In Uttar Pradesh, the notorious psycho killer Gurpreet Singh, who instilled fear in Chandauli and Varanasi, has been eliminated. A former soldier, he claimed the lives of three innocent individuals within just 26 hours before being shot dead in a police encounter late Monday night. His story resembles a chilling thriller, where a deranged murderer fired at strangers without any motive. After committing his third murder at a private hospital in Chandauli on Monday morning, he was apprehended by a mob and handed over to the police.

According to Chandauli's SP Akash Patel, the police took Gurpreet to the locations of his crimes late Monday night to recreate the crime scenes and gather solid evidence.

During this process, Gurpreet executed a cunning move. He snatched a police officer's service pistol and opened fire while attempting to escape into the darkness. Despite warnings to surrender, he continued shooting. In the ensuing exchange of fire, he was hit by two police bullets. Gurpreet was rushed to the district hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

26 Hours of Terror: Three Murders with a Similar Modus Operandi

From Sunday morning to Monday morning, Gurpreet Singh unleashed a wave of terror. Each of his murders followed the same pattern: shooting his victims at point-blank range.

1. First Murder: Mangru's Killing on a Passenger Train

The series of events began around 7 AM on Sunday. Mangru, a resident of Ghazipur, was returning home from Karnataka and was on the DDY Tardi Ghat passenger train. A minor argument ensued between Gurpreet and Mangru near the Kuchman station in Chandauli. In a fit of rage, Gurpreet shot Mangru in the head and discarded his body from the moving train before jumping off near Tajpur village.

2. Second Murder: Dinesh's Death on Jammu Tawi Express

After the first murder, Gurpreet walked about 9 kilometers to reach Vyas Nagar village, where he boarded the Jammu Tawi Express. Around 2 AM on Sunday night, as the train slowed near Mughal Sarai, Dinesh Sahu, who was traveling with his family, went to the bathroom. Gurpreet followed the same pattern and shot Dinesh in the head before escaping by jumping off the train.

3. Third Murder: Killing of a Woman in a Hospital Bed

On Monday around 8:30 AM, Gurpreet arrived at Jivak Hospital in Chandauli, disguised with a cloth over his face. He approached 55-year-old Lakshmina Devi, who was admitted there, and shot her in the head while she was asleep, causing chaos in the hospital.

A Brave Auto Driver's Intervention

Following the murder in the hospital, Gurpreet attempted to flee while firing his weapon. However, an auto driver named Vinod Dubey displayed remarkable courage by chasing him down, twisting his arm, and forcing him to drop the pistol. The hospital staff and local crowd quickly surrounded him, and an angry mob beat him before the police arrived to rescue him.

‘I Am the King of My Mind’

During interrogation, shocking details about Gurpreet Singh emerged. The 45-year-old, originally from Amritsar, had retired from the army in 2021 and was dismissed from his security guard job in Bihar due to his alcohol addiction. He expressed his rage during questioning, stating, 'I am the king of my mind. I lose control after drinking. I have killed not one, but two or three.' According to the police, he had no personal vendetta against any of his victims; he was merely targeting strangers to vent his anger.

Police Vigilance and Conclusion

ADG Piyush Mordi conducted a site visit. The police faced the challenge of linking murders occurring in different locations like trains and hospitals. However, the consistent method of shooting at the temple and eyewitness descriptions of a 'saffron scarf' and a '6-foot tall' individual solidified their suspicions. Ultimately, this psycho killer, who had taken three innocent lives in 26 hours, met his end at the hands of the police, from whom he had attempted to escape.
