Protests Erupt in Sivasagar Over Gas Leak and Worker Rights
Protests Against SK Petro Services in Sivasagar
Sivasagar, June 21: On Saturday, the Bir Lachit Sena organized demonstrations in response to the recent gas leak incident in Sivasagar, criticizing the negligence of the contractor, SK Petro Services.
The protestors outlined three key demands, which SK Petro Services has committed to addressing.
Among their requests, the Bir Lachit Sena called for fair compensation for the family of a worker who tragically lost his life while employed by SK Petro Services. They also insisted on the prompt payment of salaries and benefits, such as EPF, to all workers, alongside job opportunities for local Assamese youth based on their skills and qualifications.
Shrinkhal Chaliha, the administrative secretary of Bir Lachit Sena, emphasized the importance of involving local and regional associations in the hiring process, rather than relying on any oil field workers’ association.
In a press conference, Abhijit Barpatragohain, the manager of SK Petro Services, assured that the company would strive to meet the group's demands and would seek assistance from the district administration regarding compensation.
“We will initiate the compensation process through the district administration, as we do not have the authority to grant it independently,” Barpatragohain stated during the press briefing.
Chaliha criticized Krishna Agarwal, the owner of SK Petro Services, for failing to visit the site of the gas leak and accused him of exploiting his workers. In response, Barpatragohain explained that Agarwal was unable to visit due to health issues.
“He is currently in Bangalore for health reasons, which is why he has not been able to come to the site,” the manager clarified.
The Bir Lachit Sena has voiced strong disapproval of SK Petro Services for its alleged mistreatment of workers and expressed support for all organizations advocating for the welfare of the Assamese community and the working class.
“Should SK Petro Services be blacklisted, we will ensure that those currently employed are safeguarded and rehabilitated,” a senior leader from the organization remarked.
