Protests Erupt in Kokrajhar Over Alleged Rape of Mentally Challenged Woman
Impact of Protests in Kokrajhar
On Sunday, life in Kokrajhar district, Assam, was significantly disrupted due to a shutdown called in protest against the alleged rape of a mentally challenged woman. The incident occurred in the Patharghat area on Saturday, and the suspect was apprehended just hours later.
Authorities reported that the accused, a resident of Dhubri district, sustained injuries from police gunfire while attempting to flee after allegedly trying to seize an officer's weapon. During the shutdown organized by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), markets and businesses remained closed.
Public transportation was also largely absent from the streets. In response to the situation, the administration enforced a curfew under Section 163 of the Indian Citizen Security Code and deployed additional forces to sensitive areas.
Officials urged the public to disregard rumors and warned of strict legal action against those spreading misinformation. They also requested that any suspicious information be reported to the district control room.
District Magistrate Pankaj Chakraborty and Senior Superintendent of Police Akshat Garg held discussions with political parties and social organizations to ensure peace. Chakraborty announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
A senior police officer indicated that due to rising tensions in the area, the suspect was placed in a safe zone, where he attempted to escape while being transported to court. The accused has since been admitted to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital.
