Margherita, April 21: Assam's Digboi town has been engulfed in tension following a murder that sparked widespread protests. Local residents took to the streets, setting vehicles ablaze and clashing with law enforcement on National Highway-38.
The unrest was ignited by the death of Akash Tiwari, who was reportedly run over by a truck in what authorities suspect was a premeditated act. This incident occurred in Pawai, under the jurisdiction of the Digboi Police Station, and has incited significant outrage in the area.
Initial reports suggest that the conflict arose from a dispute between two groups. Individuals named Sunil Singh, Vikas Singh, and Akash Singh were allegedly involved in a confrontation with Tiwari. The situation escalated when Tiwari was attacked while unloading goods from a vehicle.
It is alleged that Akash Singh deliberately drove a truck (registration number AS 01SC 1951) into Tiwari multiple times, resulting in his death.
After the incident, Akash Singh turned himself in at the Margherita Police Station. However, since the crime took place within Digboi's jurisdiction, he was subsequently arrested by the Digboi Police.
The news of Tiwari's murder triggered a swift and intense response from the community. Hundreds gathered on NH-38, demanding immediate and severe punishment for the accused. Protesters blocked the highway, causing traffic disruptions, and set at least two vehicles on fire as tensions escalated.
Despite multiple attempts by police to disperse the crowd and restore calm, the situation remained unstable for several hours. Clashes reportedly occurred between law enforcement and protesters, with both sides claiming injuries, although the exact number of casualties has not been confirmed.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as smoke rose from burning vehicles, with protesters chanting slogans in anger over the murder and calling for justice for the victim.
In response to the unrest, additional security forces have been deployed to prevent further escalation and maintain public order.
Authorities have stated that an investigation is ongoing, and appropriate legal measures will be taken against those involved in the murder, as well as those responsible for the violence and arson during the protests.
