Tensions Rise at Punjab University

Chandigarh, March 9, 2026: A significant controversy erupted today at Punjab University (PU) when student organizations staged a massive protest against the invitation extended to a prominent leader associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Banveer Rana, to speak at a lecture on Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Sikh history.

Protesters accused the university administration of attempting to disseminate political propaganda by inviting speakers linked to the RSS and BJP. They labeled the event as 'propaganda,' asserting that a university should remain an academic institution and not promote political organizations. The demonstrators chanted slogans opposing the RSS and demanded that the university be free from political influence.

As tensions escalated, Chandigarh police deployed a significant force to the area. The protest began to turn violent, prompting police action to disperse the crowd. Clashes ensued, resulting in the detention of numerous students, who were taken to the Sector-11 police station.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student organization affiliated with the RSS, defended the event, claiming it was centered on Sikh history and values, allowing for diverse viewpoints. However, opposing student groups, including others, clearly labeled it as political interference.

Following the controversy, the lecture was abruptly halted. The atmosphere on campus remains tense, with increased police patrols. Students are demanding the immediate cancellation of such controversial invitations and the maintenance of an academic environment that respects all ideologies.

This incident marks a new chapter in the ongoing student movements at Punjab University over the past few months. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will follow.
