Protests Erupt at Bradford Literature Festival Over Pakistani Diplomat's Speech
Protests Disrupt Diplomatic Event
Pakistan faced renewed embarrassment as protests broke out during a speech by a Pakistani diplomat at the Bradford Literature Festival in the UK. The incident occurred when activist Mahmood Kashmiri staged a walkout at the Global Mushaira event, where he confronted Consul General Zahid Ahmed Khan, accusing Pakistan of committing atrocities and imposing blockades in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
Kashmiri challenged the diplomat regarding the ongoing crisis in PoK, demanding the withdrawal of Pakistani military forces. He claimed that essential supplies like food and medicine have been restricted in the region, condemning the actions of the Pakistani army in PoJK. The activist voiced his concerns over human rights abuses and called for the military to cease its oppressive actions in the area. Despite the tension, attendees attempted to pacify Kashmiri and expressed gratitude for his participation.
This incident coincides with widespread anti-Pakistan demonstrations in PoJK, triggered by a harsh government crackdown that has led to the arrest of over 600 civil rights activists. The detention of prominent protest leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir has escalated tensions in the region, prompting the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) to issue a strong statement. On social media, the JAAC expressed outrage over the detention of its leaders, urging immediate public action under the hashtag #ReleaseShoukatNawazMir.
