Protests Continue at Jamia Millia Islamia

New Delhi. Following the announcement of student union elections at Jamia Millia Islamia, protests resumed on Monday. The university administration has issued an order to conduct elections within 15 days after approving the student union's constitution. However, protesting students are insisting on the appointment of a chief election officer to ensure the election process is completed within the stipulated timeframe. They have stated that the movement will persist until the administration takes concrete steps regarding their demands.

Student Asif Khan emphasized the need for the university administration to appoint a chief election officer promptly to facilitate the election process. He pointed out that merely issuing an order to conduct elections is insufficient; a timely arrangement must also be ensured. The protesting students claim that many of their demands remain unaddressed, and they are not prepared to end their movement.

The primary demands of the students include halting online classes, reopening the canteen and library, establishing a clear timeline for the approval process of the student union's constitution, and the resignation of the chief proctor. Protesters have accused the university administration of lacking communication with the students, believing that the formation of a student union is essential for addressing student issues and providing a formal platform for their grievances.

Earlier on Monday, around 100 female students entered the university campus through various entrances. Some gathered outside gate number seven. Amid the situation, Delhi police detained several protesters. During the protests, some students raised slogans against the police. One student mentioned that there are numerous issues ranging from admission to securing seats in hostels and food arrangements in the mess. According to him, establishing dialogue between students and the university administration is crucial, necessitating the formation of a student union to raise complaints appropriately.

Meanwhile, the university administration has issued significant orders regarding the student union elections. According to the directives released on Monday, elections must be conducted within 15 days following the approval of the student union's constitution. Additionally, the administration has decided to withdraw suspension orders and show-cause notices issued during the protests. The university's registrar, Mohammad Mahtab Alam Rizvi, stated that a committee will be formed to investigate the behavior of security personnel during the protests.

The administration's decisions come after considering the demands submitted by students and their representatives, who are on a hunger strike. The order also mentions that the protesting students have agreed to publicly apologize for any alleged defamatory statements made against the university administration during the protests. They will need to hold a press conference and remove related posts from social media platforms immediately.

Despite the administration's decisions regarding conducting elections, withdrawing suspension orders, and forming a committee to investigate security personnel's behavior, protests on campus have not completely ceased. Students continue to demand the appointment of a chief election officer and a clear timeline for the election process. Moving forward, dialogue between the university administration and the protesting students will be crucial. Currently, the situation at Jamia campus remains tense amid ongoing deadlock regarding the student union elections.
