Protest in Dibrugarh Demands Justice for Zubeen Garg and ILP Implementation
Protest for Justice and Cultural Preservation
Dibrugarh, Mar 13: On Friday, members of the Asomiya Yuva Mancha and Asomiya Mahila Mancha gathered at Chowkidingee Chariali in Dibrugarh to voice their demands, which included justice for the renowned Assamese artist Zubeen Garg and the enforcement of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Assam.
The demonstrators also called for the deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, advocating for the effective implementation of the Assam Accord, alongside measures to tackle the rising costs of essential goods.
A representative from the Asomiya Yuva Mancha expressed the need for state government intervention on various pressing issues affecting the region.
“We urge the Chief Minister to ensure justice for Zubeen Garg, implement the Inner Line Permit, and take action against the escalating prices of essential items,” stated one protester.
Another member raised concerns about the prolonged delay in the legal proceedings related to the singer's case.
“It has been over six months. When will Zubeen Garg receive justice? Elections will come and go, but if justice is postponed, he may never see it. Hence, we demand prompt action,” the protester emphasized.
The member further criticized the government for its inaction regarding the Inner Line Permit, despite being in power for nearly a decade, and highlighted the issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh.
A representative from the Asomiya Mahila Mancha urged the government to hasten the legal processes involved.
“Elections will come and go, but we cannot bring Zubeen da back. The Chief Minister had previously assured us of justice, but now he claims the judiciary will decide. We trust the judiciary, but the process needs to be expedited,” she remarked.
The protester also advocated for the establishment of a fast-track court to ensure timely justice.
“Today, the Prime Minister is in Assam, and the Union Home Minister will also visit, yet the government appears unresponsive to our demands for justice for Zubeen Garg. We implore the Chief Minister to advocate for quicker proceedings and ensure justice before the Assembly elections,” she added.
During the protest, participants warned that their agitation would escalate if their demands were not met by the government.
Organized by the Dibrugarh district committees of both organizations, the demonstration featured participants holding banners and chanting slogans, creating a vibrant atmosphere at the busy intersection.
