Demow, Oct 28: The Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) from Demow has been staging an indefinite sit-in protest for two days outside the Co-District Commissioner’s Office located on Hari Pora Road.
The demonstrators are advocating for the revocation of licenses granted to country liquor shops situated in tea garden regions, demanding their immediate closure.
Additionally, they are calling for stringent measures against gambling, drug use, the sale of gutkha, and other alleged anti-social behaviors prevalent in tea garden areas and the surrounding regions of Greater Demow.
During the protest, Amon Mirdha, the secretary of ATTSA Demow Branch, expressed that the organization has repeatedly reached out to local authorities regarding these issues but has not received adequate responses.
“We have submitted numerous letters to the sub-district administration requesting a halt to the issuance of licenses for liquor shops. The government is irresponsibly granting licenses for these establishments, which we strongly oppose. Our protest will persist until these liquor shops are shut down,” Mirdha stated.
The organization highlighted that the increase in country liquor shops and related activities is detrimental to the social fabric, threatening the future of youth and compromising the safety and welfare of families.
The protesters have urged local authorities to take swift legal action, review the licensing of country liquor outlets in the area, and revoke any licenses that were issued unlawfully.
They have declared that the sit-in will persist until their demands are met.
This protest is organized by the ATTSA Demow Branch, with backing from the Assam Tea Tribes Women’s Association (ATTWA), various sub-branches of the association, and local workers and employees.
