Priyanka Gandhi's Criticism of Jersey Change
On Thursday, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her disapproval regarding the Indian hockey team's recent shift from blue to saffron jerseys. She connected this alteration to broader issues concerning the rewriting of India's historical narrative. Addressing reporters during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, she emphasized that the essence of the nation is grounded in principles of non-violence, truth, and brotherhood, which cannot be erased.
Her remarks followed Hockey India's announcement of new uniforms for both the senior men's and women's teams on July 27, in anticipation of the upcoming FIH Men's and Women's Hockey World Cups.
Concerns Over Historical Narrative
"Whether it’s changing uniforms or attempting to alter history through educational reforms, their actions are evident. The youth of our nation have voiced their opinions on this matter, as seen during the gatherings at Jantar Mantar. This reflects the sentiments of the country," stated the Congress MP.
"The fight for our independence was rooted in non-violence and truth; the RSS had no role in that struggle. The truth is known to all, and those who were unaware are now beginning to understand the true motives behind these actions," she added.
Historical Legacy and Values
Priyanka Gandhi reiterated that the Congress party spearheaded the freedom movement under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership, asserting that the fundamental values of the nation cannot be changed.
"The Congress led that movement under Mahatma Gandhi's guidance, and the very essence of this country is based on non-violence, truth, and brotherhood. No one can take that away—not the RSS or anyone else," she declared.
"Regardless of how much division, violence, or hatred they attempt to instigate, the soul of our nation—characterized by brotherhood, love, and unity—remains unscathed; they cannot strip that away," she concluded.
Former Captain's Reaction to Jersey Color
In a related note, former Indian hockey captain and Olympian Viren Rasquinha voiced his concerns regarding Hockey India's choice of an orange jersey for the national team. He remarked that the team's identity has historically been linked to the color blue. Expressing his disappointment on social media, he stated, "While @TheHockeyIndia has accomplished many positive things for hockey, this decision is embarrassing. The legacy and identity of the Indian team have always been BLUE. I proudly wore the blue jersey for many years. Fans want to see our team in blue. What is the reasoning behind orange?"
