Priyanka Gandhi's Strong Condemnation
On Sunday, senior Congress leader and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her outrage over the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, labeling the act as abhorrent. She criticized the attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, stating that such actions deserve unequivocal condemnation. She lamented that many nations are now being drawn into this conflict.
Call for Peace and Safety of Indian Citizens
Recalling Mahatma Gandhi's words, 'An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind,' Priyanka Gandhi stressed the need for peace rather than unnecessary wars. She expressed hope that after Israel's Prime Minister and President bowed to pressure, the Indian Prime Minister would make every effort to ensure the safe return of all Indian citizens trapped in affected countries. Earlier in the day, Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh reacted to Khamenei's assassination, describing it as the end of an era and highlighting the historical ties between India and Iran.
Sanjay Singh's Tribute and Call for Clarity
In his post on X, Singh noted that for those whose ancestors hail from India, Khamenei's rise as Iran's Supreme Leader marks the conclusion of an era. He stated that India has lost a reliable friend, paying his respects to Khamenei. Singh pointed out that Iran has traditionally supported India, consistently voting against Pakistan and standing by India, providing energy security. He urged the Indian government to clarify its stance during this crisis, warning that the tyranny of global bullies like the United States could spread worldwide.
Public Mourning in Iran
Meanwhile, according to Iranian state media, a 40-day public mourning period has been declared in Iran following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His passing occurred after the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel (Operation Epic Fury/Lion's Roar) on Saturday. The office of the Supreme Leader announced a national mourning period, during which flags will be flown at half-mast and public gatherings will be held to pay tribute. This marks the end of a 37-year chapter in the history of the Islamic Republic. Khamenei was the successor to the founder of the revolution, Ruhollah Khomeini, and since 1989, his leadership has symbolized unwavering resistance against Western influence.
