Prime Minister Modi's Upcoming Visit to Tamil Nadu: Key Highlights
Prime Minister Modi's Significant Journey to Tamil Nadu
On the night of February 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Chennai, marking the beginning of an important trip to South India. According to senior sources within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Prime Minister will spend the night at the Governor's residence in Chennai. Extensive security and administrative arrangements have been put in place across the city ahead of his arrival. The following morning, on March 1, he will depart for Puducherry, where he is scheduled to participate in a public meeting and address a large gathering. This visit aims to highlight key developmental initiatives and government welfare schemes, ensuring participation from local leaders, officials, and party workers.
Visit to Madurai and Cultural Engagement
After concluding his activities in Puducherry, the Prime Minister will head to Madurai, often referred to as the 'city that never sleeps' and one of Tamil Nadu's most culturally significant centers. During his visit to Madurai, he will pay his respects and pray at the historic Tirupparankundram Murugan Temple, one of the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan and an important pilgrimage site. Notably, this temple has recently gained attention due to the Karthigai Deepam controversy, which captured public and administrative interest.
Following his temple visit, he will participate in a grand public rally in Madurai, where a large crowd from various southern districts is expected to gather to hear the Prime Minister's address. This tour is anticipated to strengthen outreach efforts in the region while also showcasing cultural heritage, infrastructure development, and public welfare initiatives.
Political Landscape Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections
Meanwhile, elections for the 234 members of the Tamil Nadu Assembly are set to take place in the first six months of 2026. The coalition led by MK Stalin is preparing to introduce the 'Dravidian Model 2.0' in an effort to secure victory against the BJP-AIADMK alliance. The entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay's party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), is likely to transform the Tamil Nadu elections into a triangular contest. In the 2021 elections, the DMK won 133 assembly seats, while Congress secured 18, PMK five, VCK four, and other parties (including independents) won eight seats. The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which included Congress, won a total of 159 seats. The NDA secured 75 seats, with AIADMK emerging as the largest party in the alliance with 66 seats.
