Prime Minister Modi's Historic Visit to Assam on February 14
Overview of the Upcoming Visit
Guwahati, Feb 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make a landmark visit to Assam on February 14, with plans for his aircraft to land on the Northeast's inaugural highway-based emergency landing strip located on the Dibrugarh–Moran route. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that instead of using the Dibrugarh airport, the Prime Minister's flight will touch down on the highway at Moran, where it will remain for a while.
Special Aerial Display Planned
During this visit, a unique aerial display is also scheduled. Sarma mentioned that fighter jets, including Rafale and Sukhoi, which were showcased at the recent Guwahati air show, will land on the highway in the Prime Minister's presence. This demonstration is expected to last between 30 to 40 minutes.
Currently, vehicles are allowed on the Dibrugarh–Moran stretch, but the designated runway area has been kept clear and ready for operations. To facilitate aircraft landings, central dividers have been removed, and fencing has been installed on both sides of the road to prevent unauthorized access during flight activities. Additionally, temporary roadside vendors have been cleared as a safety precaution.
Objectives of the Visit
According to the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister's visit will serve multiple purposes, encompassing both developmental and organizational aspects. The itinerary includes the inauguration of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma bridge, which connects Guwahati and North Guwahati, a long-awaited project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity across the Brahmaputra.
Furthermore, Modi will officially commence academic classes at the Palasbari campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), marking a significant advancement in higher education for the state. He will also flag off 100 electric buses for Guwahati, part of initiatives to enhance public transport, and inaugurate a new data center established by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to improve digital infrastructure in the region.
Engagement with Party Workers
After the inaugurations, the Prime Minister will participate in a BJP booth sammelan at Khanapara, where he is anticipated to engage with party workers and grassroots leaders. Sarma also indicated that Modi is expected to return to Assam in March to inaugurate a series of infrastructure and development projects.
This upcoming visit will mark Modi's 38th trip to Assam in the last 11 years.
