Overview of Prime Minister's Foreign Travels

New Delhi, August 6 – In 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's travels to 23 countries, including the USA, UK, France, China, and Japan, have incurred expenses exceeding ₹180 crore. The Ministry of External Affairs provided these figures in a written response to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, detailing the costs associated with the Prime Minister's foreign trips on a country-wise and year-wise basis. So far in 2026, approximately ₹74.58 crore has been spent on his international travels.

This amount includes his trip to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand from July 6 to 11. Members of the Aam Aadmi Party and CPI(M) had requested a detailed account of the Prime Minister's foreign trips from 2021 to the present, along with the associated costs. In response, the Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margerita, provided a breakdown of the expenses incurred for each trip since 2021.

According to the data, the Prime Minister's visit to the USA in 2011 cost ₹10,74,27,363, while his trip to Russia in 2013 amounted to ₹9,95,76,890. The expenses for his visits to France in 2011 and Germany in 2013 were ₹8,33,49,463 and ₹6,02,23,484, respectively. It was clarified that these figures reflect actual costs without adjustments for inflation or currency exchange rates. The total expenditure for the Prime Minister's various trips in 2025 is approximately ₹187 crore.

The breakdown of expenses includes ₹25,59,82,902 for the trip to France, ₹16,54,84,302 for the USA, ₹15,54,03,792.47 for Saudi Arabia, ₹17,72,22,144 for Brazil, ₹10,59,90,561 for China, and ₹9,91,55,061.39 for the UK. Additionally, in 2025, the Prime Minister visited Mauritius, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, Canada, Croatia, Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Namibia, the Maldives, Japan, Bhutan, South Africa, Jordan, Oman, and Ethiopia. In a separate written response in July 2025, the government reported that the total expenditure on the Prime Minister's foreign trips from 2021 to 2024 was around ₹295 crore.

The data indicates that in 2024, the Prime Minister's travels to 16 countries, including Russia, Ukraine, the USA, and Brazil, cost approximately ₹109 crore. In 2023, the expenses were around ₹93 crore, while in 2022, they totaled ₹55.82 crore, and in 2021, about ₹36 crore was spent. In 2021, the Prime Minister visited Bangladesh, the USA, Italy, and the UK, with respective costs of ₹1,00,71,288, ₹19,63,27,806, ₹6,90,49,376, and ₹8,57,41,408.

The Ministry of External Affairs was also asked for details on bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed during these trips, as well as the foreign direct investment (FDI) resulting from them. Margerita stated, "The Prime Minister's high-level foreign visits are a well-established means of strengthening relations with other countries and enhancing India's participation at bilateral, regional, and global levels. The agreements and understandings reached during these trips help bolster partnerships in various sectors, including technology, innovation, trade and investment, defense, energy cooperation, and robust supply chains."

In a comprehensive 35-page response, details of the MoUs signed during these travels were shared, indicating that from April 2021 to December 2025, India received a total of $381.8 billion in FDI.

According to the list shared by the government, a total of 316 MoUs have been signed during the Prime Minister's foreign trips since July 2021.
