On the commencement of the Amarnath Yatra, Prime Minister Modi expressed his wishes for a safe and prosperous journey for the devotees through a letter. The annual pilgrimage began on Friday, with the first group of pilgrims departing from the two base camps at Baltal and Nunwan, heading towards the cave temple located at an elevation of 3,880 meters in the southern Kashmir Himalayas. This cave temple is renowned for its naturally formed ice Shiva Lingam.

In his letter, Modi highlighted that the Amarnath Yatra, associated with the vision of Baba Barfani, represents an eternal chapter of our spiritual heritage and cultural unity. The groups of pilgrims, including men, women, and saints, set off early in the morning from the Nunwan base camp in Pahalgam, Anantnag, and the Baltal base camp in the Sonmarg area of central Kashmir.
Pilgrimage Begins with Enthusiasm
As the respective Deputy Commissioners and SSPs flagged off the groups from the base camps, the atmosphere resonated with chants of 'Bam Bam Bhole'. On Thursday, over 4,809 pilgrims were sent off from the travel base camp in Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu, with the Governor Manoj Sinha giving the green signal.

The pilgrims arrived in the Kashmir Valley in the afternoon, receiving a warm welcome from the administration and local residents. They will perform rituals at the cave temple, where the natural ice Shiva Lingam is located. To ensure the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage, stringent security measures have been implemented. Thousands of security personnel from the police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and other paramilitary forces have been deployed, along with aerial surveillance. This pilgrimage, lasting 57 days, will conclude on August 28.
