Prime Minister Modi Seeks Support for Women's Reservation Bill Ahead of Special Parliament Session
Request for Support from Political Leaders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to leaders of all political parties through letters, urging them to support the implementation of the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' (Women's Reservation Act) ahead of the special parliamentary session scheduled from April 16 to 18. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring that the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections include reservations for women.
Need for Amendments to the Law
According to the original Women's Reservation Act passed in 2023, the reservation could only take effect after the delimitation process following the 2027 census. This meant that women would not receive reservations until after 2034. In his letter, Modi clarified that after extensive discussions and expert opinions, the government concluded that the law should be amended to allow for implementation starting with the 2029 general elections.
Proposed Changes
Modi stated that passing this amendment would significantly transform the democratic framework of the country. The number of seats in the Lok Sabha would increase from the current total to 816, with 273 seats specifically reserved for women.
Ending Decades of Waiting
In his correspondence, Modi highlighted the achievements of Indian women across various fields, from space exploration to sports and the armed forces. He reminded that in 2023, Parliament unitedly supported this act, symbolizing our democratic unity. The Prime Minister remarked, 'This moment transcends any single party or individual; it is time to fulfill our responsibility towards women and future generations.'
Historic Discussions Starting April 16
The duration of the Parliament's budget session has been extended, with the special session commencing on April 16. Modi expressed hope that all MPs would rise above party politics to be part of this historic change. He is confident that this will be a significant achievement for the 1.4 billion Indians and the nation's women.
